Los Angeles Lakers – A Name with History
The Los Angeles Lakers haven't always been known by this name. The Lakers were founded in 1947 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. That’s why they originally played under the name Minneapolis Lakers. Minnesota is also known as the 'Land of 10,000 Lakes,' which is where the 'Lakers' part of the name comes from. The team has only had its current name since 1958, the year they moved to Los Angeles. The 'Lakers' name remained, while the city name was updated.
Successes and Rivals of the Los Angeles Lakers
Since their founding, the LA Lakers have been one of the most successful teams in the NBA. Between 1949 and 1954 alone, they won five out of six championships. In total, the team from Los Angeles has brought home 16 championship titles. So far, only the Boston Celtics can boast more championship wins (17).
The LA Lakers and the Boston Celtics have been known as major rivals from the very beginning. They have already faced each other twelve times in the NBA Finals. Of those, the Lakers were only able to win three matches and suffered nine defeats.

Above the symbolic basketball was the 'MPLS' lettering framed by two yellow stars. Below that, the team immortalized itself with the 'LAKERS' lettering, also in yellow.
This logo lasted for about twelve years. After moving to LA, however, a new logo was needed. The basketball was kept, but this time in gold. Above it was the 'LOS ANGELES LAKERS' lettering in purple.
This logo already strongly resembled the current Lakers logo. Only the colors and designs were slightly adjusted over the years. First, in 1977, the basketball got black outlines and the colors changed to a light yellow and a light violet. These colors were changed again in 2002. Since then, the basketball has appeared in gold again and the lettering above it in a dark purple tone.
