The brand that features the famous Kangol kangaroo as its logo was founded by Jacques Spreiregen, a Warsaw-born Jew who had lived in France for some time. Spreiregen was fascinated by French fashion from an early age and, after returning to England after the First World War, began importing French berets and marketing them as a top-modern post-war fashion accessory in England. Additionally, in 1938, he founded his own headwear textile factory in Cleator in North West England and laid the foundation for the ongoing success story of the Kangol label through the sale of beret caps.

During the Second World War, Kangol supplied the British Army with berets and also equipped the English Olympic team for the grand opening ceremony. Through innovative ideas, Spreiregen completely reinvented the classic beret some time later and used stiffer materials from then on to form a slight peak at the front of the cap. In this way, the internationally famous and now legendary Kangol 504 was eventually created, nowadays the ultimate peaked cap classic. The type designation 504 is traced back to the wooden block with that very number, from which the first template for the peaked cap was made.
