They turned their hobby into a career

The company founders and parents of Columbia president Gert Boyle arrived in the USA as German emigrants in 1937. Shortly after, they bought a small hat factory in Portland, Oregon, which they named the 'Columbia Hat Company'. They named the hat factory after the Columbia River, which flows right past their new home. Later, Gert's husband took over the company. When he passed away, Gert transformed from a housewife into a successful CEO; today, her son Tim Boyle is the head of the company. Shared outdoor experiences were always a staple for the family – and so the Boyles turned their hobby into their profession.
