Flat Brim vs Curved Brim: Which Visor Shape Is Your Fit?

Short version: a flat brim is a visor that runs straight and level across your eyes, while a curved brim arcs down over your forehead. Flat brim vs curved brim is a question about one part of the cap only: the visor. The crown and the back, closure and size included, are separate calls.
CapUniverse is a streetwear cap shop from Germany, and baseball caps are our biggest product group. Roughly seven in ten caps that leave us are baseball caps. So the visor question is the first one worth settling.
Flat brim: the straight visor and the New Era lines that carry it

A flat brim means the visor leaves the crown on one level, with no built-in arc over the brow. The look is graphic: one hard horizontal line across your face, and that line is the whole statement.
Flat doesn’t mean locked, though. New Era’s spec for the 59FIFTY visor reads “Designed to be flat, but can curve as desired”. So shaping your own brim isn’t a foul. It’s part of the design.
In the New Era range, the flat visor sits on two lines:
- 59FIFTY — the true fitted cap: a closed back in your true fitting size, a structured front panel that keeps the shape, and a full crown with a tall, broad profile. Crown height isn’t locked across the line, though. There’s also a 59FIFTY Low Profile that sits lower on the head and a lightly structured 59FIFTY Retro Crown.
- 9FIFTY — the snapback take on the 59FIFTY, built to copy its shape. The 9FIFTY Original combines a structured crown with a flat visor you can shape and an adjustable fit. Check the back, though: New Era gives the closure as snapback or strapback, so not every 9FIFTY actually snaps.
One catch before you file flat brim under a line name. New Era also makes a 9FIFTY Low Profile, which combines a contoured low-profile crown with a slightly curved visor. That’s one named variant, not the rule. But it shows that a line name alone doesn’t guarantee a flat visor. Read the visor on the product page.
One flat-visor pick from our ranking: a 59FIFTY Black on Black Yankees cap is eighth among our single best-selling products of the last ninety days.
Curved brim: the pre-curved visor that works from day one

A curved brim is a visor that arrives already bent. On several New Era lines, the spec promises a fully curved visor you can wear straight away, with no breaking in. You take the cap out of the box and the arc is already there.
Where the curve lives in the New Era range:
- 9FORTY — a structured build, a pre-curved visor and an adjustable fit, made for everyday wear. The back is open with an adjustable closure. New Era doesn’t name the closure type, so check that on the product page.
- 39THIRTY — the original stretch-fit cap, made for comfort and a sporty, low-profile look. It closes at the back and fits through a patented stretch sweatband. The curve isn’t identical across the line: the 39THIRTY M-Crown gets a slightly pre-curved visor.
- 9TWENTY — the relaxed one. Soft, unstructured front panels give it a worn-in shape, the visor is fully curved, and one size fits most. It feels comfy from the first wear.
On the curved side, a 39THIRTY League NY Basic Cap is the runner-up among our single best-selling products of the last ninety days. It’s a model New Era lists with a curved visor.
Flat brim vs curved brim: how to pick your shape
Split the cap into three questions. Each one has its own answer, and none of them settles the others.
- Visor — flat or pre-curved. This is the one that changes the look.
- Crown — structured or unstructured. The 59FIFTY, 9FIFTY, 9FORTY and 39THIRTY all get a structured front panel, the 9TWENTY is the unstructured one. The 9FORTY and 39THIRTY add a contoured crown that runs round from front to back.
- Back — closed or adjustable. Both visor shapes come with both backs. The 59FIFTY (flat) and the 39THIRTY (curved) are closed, while the 9FIFTY (flat) and the 9FORTY (curved) adjust.
A structured front panel is a crown feature. It says nothing about whether your visor is flat or curved, so never read one from the other.
Panel count is its own question again. New Era’s 9FORTY M-Crown A-Frame is a five-panel, pinched low-profile cap with a medium depth and a slightly pre-curved, shorter visor. Five panels and a curved visor in one cap: the panel count tells you nothing about the visor. Same goes for trucker caps. Mesh back or not, the visor shape stays its own call.
So which one is yours? Pick the visor by look. Go flat brim if you want that straight line across your face and a bolder silhouette. Go curved brim if you want the cap to blend in with the rest of your fit and work from the first wear. Then settle the back as a second, separate call: closed in your true fitting size, or adjustable. Your visor choice doesn’t make that call for you. Pick the shape you like and own it.
Every line named above comes from New Era, the most in-demand external brand in our shop. In our brand ranking it’s second, right behind our own label.

FAQ: flat brim and curved brim
Is a flat brim the same as a flat cap?
No. A flat brim is the shape of the visor on a baseball cap, not a cap type of its own. A flat cap is a different kind of cap altogether. Our guide Differences between Baseball Cap and Flat Cap sorts out the name clash.
Can you bend a flat brim?
Yes. New Era's spec for the 59FIFTY says the visor is designed flat but can be curved the way you like. Shaping it yourself is part of the design, not damage.
Which New Era caps come with a curved brim?
The 9FORTY combines a pre-curved visor with a structured front and an adjustable back. The 39THIRTY puts a fully curved visor on a closed stretch-fit back. The 9TWENTY adds the same fully curved visor to a relaxed, unstructured shape. So a curved brim comes with closed and adjustable backs alike.
Does a flat brim mean the cap is a snapback?
No. The 59FIFTY has a flat visor and a closed back in true fitting size. And even on the 9FIFTY, the closure can be snapback or strapback, so the back isn't a given.
What is a fitted cap?
A fitted cap is a closed-back cap you buy in your true fitting size, with no strap and no snaps to adjust. New Era builds the 59FIFTY exactly that way, and this kind of cap is also called a full cap. A closed back doesn't tie you to a flat visor, though: the 39THIRTY closes with a stretch fit and comes with a curved one.
